Squirrel conservation surveys

Your help is needed to carry out surveying work in woodlands in Cumbria early in the morning, looking for signs of red and grey squirrels. Routine visual surveys for red squirrels are carried out every spring and autumn around the Sefton Reserve in West Merseyside and the Thirlmere and Whinlatter Reserves in Cumbria and for grey squirrels particuarly in Northumberland. Full training will be provided. This will give you excellent wildlife conservation and monitoring experience.

Grey monitoring and control

We need volunteers to help catch and dispatch grey squirrels in areas where it will have a direct benefit towards saving the red squirrel. Full training and suport will be given. Save our Squirrels works closely with local groups across the north of England and the Red Squirrel Protection Partnership in Northumberland to develop a network of people able and willing to carry out grey squirrel control.

Public speaking/presentations

We are always on the look out for volunteers to give red squirrel talks in schools at at events. We will provide full training and support. This will look good on your CV and is a perfect way to develop public speaking and presentation skills. The People and Wildlife Officers have developed educational materials for in-school and field based activities for Foundation through to Key Stage three. A complete CRB through the Northumberland Wildlife Trust is required for this role. More information on giving talks.

Events

We need volunteers to help out at a wide variety of events throughout the year from fundraising events to festivals to talks and presentations. This is perfect for developing a wide range of skills and gives you valuable experience.

Administration and office work

We are always in need of assistance in our offices to do a variety of things from entering sightings into a database, help produce Friends of the Red Squirrel quarterly newsletter or preparing for events. This can provide you with invaluable office work experience and look good on your CV.
